Reviews and comments are good.

Canon is a sure bet, always at or near the top of quality compact reviews but only has 720 HD movie.

Nikon I have yet to have a go with. I nearly bought the P7000 but very slow image processing made it a none starter, but this is suppose to be fixed in P7100. Has a long range to 200mm 35mm equivalent.

Lumix get great review, very good EVF which unique in this collection displays shooting information. However although much smaller than my Nikon D90 it is quite a bit bigger than the other three when fitted with standard lens. There is a new lens available which is more compact, but increases price beyond £500. Another worry is I already have a large investment in Nikon DSLR kit, do I want to start another with 4/3 DSLR.

More photos of Scillies, from iPad

A couple more photos only this time the post has been done completely on iPad. However you can export them to standard Photos again from PMP if necessary.

Have just remembered that you can use email to upload to Flickr, and this works fine from PMP. Main requirement for me was scanning 35mm film negs and slides. Previously I had used a much more expensive Canon 9900F buth this has no Vista or Winow 7 drivers. The scans by this much cheaper Epson are a much higher quality. The Canon was more versatile with XP as it could scan 24 negs or 16 slides in one go and also large negs up to 5x4 inches but this is academic if it does not work on modern OS. The V330 can scan a strip of 6 negs or 4 slides. But I stress the scans quality much bettr on Epson.

I had been copying slides and negs off cheap light box with my Nikon D90 with Sigma EX 105mm macro lens, but these were much poorer than the scans with Epson.

I put the neg/slides in, let it use all defaults with a small amount of sharpening and close the lid and let it roll. At 2400 dpi it takes about 10 minutes, so I do this as a background task while I do something else.

Strange over the years I have switched from Canon scanners to Epson whereas for printers I have done the reverse.

- Posted using BlogPress from my iPad

Epson Perfection scanner V330

Just bought this from Amazon for just under £79 including delivery. Maybe it is just nostalgia or perhaps a desire to make the photo the experience rather than being seduced by the modern miracles of digital SLR.

Anyway after developing I copied all the negatives with my Nikon D90, Sigma 105mm Macro and light box. I use Lightroom 3 to process all my photos, together with Picasa to act as an easy front end for retrieval and searches. I was surprised to discover that neither has a standard command to simply convert negatives to positives. But this can be easily achieved in Lightroom and even applied in batch mode by making a simple preset.

Here you can see some positive and negative imges in Lightroom.

From WebImages

Select a negative and choose Develop mode, and then select the Tone Curve, which you simply reverse so that instead of a straight line from bottom left to top right it is a straight line from top left to bottom right. I called the Preset 'Negative'

From WebImages

Now in the Grid you can select all of the negatives, and then apply this Negative preset to all of them in a single batch. The Negative preset was at the bottom of a long list of supplied presets.

From WebImages

And here is the result.

From WebImages

Note

Because the Tone Curve created above inverts the luminosity then other commands effecting luminosity will also be reversed. For example increasing the blackness will in fact increase highlights, increasiung brightness will darken.

Picasa database broken - How to fix

Tried to look for photo for Christmas Card, but Picasa had corrupted it's database, so I had to un-install and re-install.

Did this twice as first time I had taken the option not to delete database, hoping it may fix without losing any of my previous settings. It did not. On restart Picasa found all my photos and rebuilt database OK but I did lose Albums which is just a logical collection of photos.

The keywords were all OK. This is because the keywords are written to the meta data of each photo. Picasa edit commands are kept in each folder in the Picasa.ini file so these are OK but I always export final photos to consolidate edits into normal jpg.

Note. If like me you use Photoshop Elements and/or Lightroom to do your key wording make sure you write these to photos. There are options in both products to do this, but it is easy to forget I would like to know if you can make this a default anywhere. If you use Picasa to add keywords these are automatically added to photo metadata.

Test to see if I can embed one of my flickr photos in Blogger with iPad

I know I can embed Picasa photos, so this is an attempt to embed flickr photo. I could do no further editing in Develop mode but as I had completed this phase this was not a problem.

However Lightroom refusal to export them to their final destination was a problem causing me to lose all of my Development work.

My work methodology is to post process in Lightroom Develop, add keywords, rename with meaningful names and then switch to Picasa to add location, back to Lightroom to export to final file folder and upload better ones to Flickr. Although the photos appeared in index grid they were reported as corrupted. Looking at photos in Picasa the names and keywords all still OK but of course Picasa could not add Lightroom Development changes.

I had to open every photo in Photoshop CS5, do a small change so that I could save it, then Lightroom accepted it and would export the photos applying Lightroom edits. The small change was necessary otherwise CS5 ignored save. Important not to rotate any photo whilst in CS5 as Lightroom does not detect this and your beautiful sky graded filters are applied from the side!

I guess I will have to add location in Picasa before I start any Lightroom processing.
Does any know better way to add location in Lightroom.

Kookaburra Narrawallee Ulladulla NSW Australia 19-03-2006

Took this photo at my pal's house at Narrawallee. However there appears to be no function to do this. You can sort photos within a set but not the sets themselves on the Flickr page.

Sets within a Collection can be manually sorted, so I created a collection called ALL and have manually sorted these sets alphabetically. Took about 5 minutes but should be a one off exercise. Next time I create a set all I need do is add it to ALL collection abd move it to the relevant position.

To create this Collection and organize alphabetically go to the Flickr Organize screen and select "Collections and Sets" Tab, create new Collection and drag and drop the Sets into it making sure you drop them alphabetically. I did this by taking each Set in sequence as shown by default on the display, and as I dragged it into the column on the left under the ALL Collection I made sure I dropped it in the correct place alphabetically. If you miss you can position your mouse over it in the left column and drag it to correct place.

Adding or editing Flickr blogger link solved.

Flickr now has the ability to post directly to several Blogger applications. You can increase highlights and/or add fill-in light to increase brilliance, You can also make the dark areas darker by adjusting the shadow slider, but this does not effect the bright and mid tones.

However you can achieve overall darkening by using the graduated filter. This is generally used to decrease the brightness of the sky and enhance blue colour or cloud definition. In this effect you set where the graduation is to end which is indicated by a cross which is set at the centre of the photo, the amount of shade and feathering.

If you drag down the cross to the bottom of the photo and set the feather to 0, then the whole image is darkened uniformly and the amount can be controlled by the shade slider.

You can also change the colour of the shade, but being colour blind I keep away from this feature.

Photoshop Elements 6 - Camera RAW Profile

The RAW processing in my PSE did not have any camera profile.

I discovered that as well as replacing Camera Raw.8bi you need to execute the program CameraProfiles.exe Both these are downloaded from Adobe, and I used the ZIP for PSE v6 file found at http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/thankyou.jsp?ftpID=4582&fileID=4238

Note Camera_RAW_5_5.zip is the latest version supported on PSE 6. Other things I noticed quickly were

Faster continuous shutter operation.
Easier menus.
Brilliant screen.

PhotoShop Elements Curves Plugin

V 2.1

Screen Shot

Operation

Download

Curves Adjustment for Photoshop Elements
(Test entry for Scribefire)

Photoshop Elements offers in opposite to its professional version no curves command. That's a pity, because curves are a valuable tool for image editing.

To remedy this shortcoming this site offers the plugin SmartCurve to upgrade this ability. Of course this plugin can be used from all programs which can integrate Photoshop plugins.

Features:

Curves adjustment of RGB and gray images.

Full support of 8 and 16 bits color depth.

Use of the more common gamma correction.

Smart-display of the live histogram.

Auto level correction by setting of shadows and highlights.

Remove of color casts by setting of multiple midtones.

Highlighting of clipped colors.

Different color spaces like RGB, CMK, Lab and others.

Channel masks to limit curve effects.

Works as smart filter in PhotoShop CS3.

Pixel and percentage curve editing and view.

Batch Mode for applying a curve on multiple images.

Please read the help provided by the program to learn all features and functions of SmartCurve.

This plugin is useful not only for Photoshop Element user, since it offers solid curve adjustment beyond the ability of many other programs.

Picasa Renaming multiple files

Ror years now I have been irritated by two aspects of Picasa when renaming multiple files.

If the the name ends with a number it increments this number and does not just add an incremental suffix

Example if there are 3 photos that end with, say nikon_d80, it makes the files name end with d80, d81, d82 whereas what I wanted was d80-0, d8-1, d80-2

If the name ends with a none-number letter then it adds nothing to the first, and then increases by one thereafter.

Example if 3 files end with tree, it will be named tree, tree-1, tree-2 and to ensure they are displayed in the correct sequence I have to rename the first file as tree-0 after the bulk rename as a separate step.

By chance I realised that you can combine the two deficiencies to acheive what I want. In the d80 example just make sure the name ends with d80-0, and then Picasa will rename the files as d80-0, d80-1 and d80-2

Picasa - effects of rename outside of Picasa

I reckon that if you change the name of a photo which you had previously edited with Picasa, then the edits which I believe are recorded in Picasa.ini for that folder, are lost, i.e. not applied to the new named photo.

However today I noticed this was not the case. I renamed some files both in Windows File Explorer and in another program (FastStone Image Viewer) and Picasa still recognised the and applied the edits to the newly named photo.

Picasas needs to be open when the files are renamed I believe oherwise it does not reconnect the new name to its original edits.

Processing and cataloguing sequence

It's been some time since I made an entry on this blog, mainly because I have been investigating other resources, namely my own web site and Google Docs.

Method

Like many other people I generate a lot of digital images, so I am always looking for ways to reduce time in processing them. Currently I

Take photos in Nikon D90 and Canon G9

I set both to record RAW and JPG

After downloading to PC I review JPGs through Picasa, using Picasa to make quick improvements. (Note Picasa does not change original)

I grade them by adding star onto better ones

Star photos I load equivalent RAW into Photo Shop Elements 6 and edit, saving final JPG at maximum quality.

I merge these "RAW" JPGS with original JPG from step(3) and export to a work folder,
because I want to review them in FastStone Image Viewer which will not process Picasa edits. Exporting them applies the edits before exporting but again does not change original jpg.

Use excellent caparison features in FastStone Image Viewer to select best photo (not always the RAW based one) and to choose between similar photos, deleting ones not required

Use FastStone Image Viewer rename facility to create names, keeping original camera sequence number and building up name and finally adding date-time stamp to name.

Return to Picasa which I use to add keyword tags.

Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 Catalog Management

Adobe Photoshop Elements 6 Catalog Management
I managed to delete my keywords! Did this by selecting all which I assumed would only select the current folder and in fact selected all 15,000+ entries. I then deleted, thankfully only entries and not base photo, and so lost all keyword data. However as I am prone to do this and also worried about depending only upon a program for keyword data I write the keywords into the EXIF data of the file, a command within PSE, although I sometimes forget this. So I was able to recover 95% of my keyword data when I reloaded the photos.

I had to move dozens of keywords around to re-create the original keyword structure, realising in the process that my keyword standards had room for improvement. Anyway at the end of this 4 hours of work I decided to backup what I could of this keyword and catalog information, I always back up the photos in a separate procedure.

First I noticed that in PSE 6 you can export/import catalogue keyword structure t a XML file,(see Adobe Forum ) so I did this. Then I created a new catalogue to act as a copy for my main one. This had no photos so start with. First import Keyword structure created above and then to load photos once more only this time I did not have to rebuild the keyword structure, so it only took about 30 minutes, most of this processing so that I got on writing this log.

I now propose to go through keywords and improve structure, writing outcome to photos EXIF data s I proceed, but I will do this in small intervals during the next month.

I now can select from two catalogs, one which I have called a copy. I intend once the Keyword Structure is improved to have two catalogs and to flip-flop between them so that I have only to recreate the last weeks work if it should fail. I will also copy catalog to a USB Hard Drive every month.

QuickTime Causes PSE 6 Organizer to Fail to Start

QuickTime & PSE 6

5/4/08 08:45

To run PhotoShop Elements 6.0 (PSE 6) I have manually delete QuickTime folder in Program files after each XP Start. If not then I can either adjust one or both of these or change the ISO setting.

I realised early that this was not necessary the case when using the flash. If the flash is set to its normal default TTL settings then the D80 will adjust the duration of the flash so that the chosen aperture and speed settings give the correct exposure. Of course with the pop-up flash you cannot go beyond 1/200 of sec although the SB600 flash will allow higher shutter speeds.

For none flash photography I often choose to leave the camera in Program P mode and with ISO Auto set (option 7 in the Custom Settings Menu) and depending on lens I usually have ISO Auto set for maximum of 400 (800 in very poor lighting) and shutter set to 1/60 or greater if using longer focal length.

Following some home investigation into sharpness of image for various f settings for a collection of lenses I proved to myself what is well known by almost every photographer that lenses perform much better when stopped down by two or three stops from their maximum. For example 50 mm f 1.8 works much better at f5.6 then f1.8, the 18-70 Nikkor performs much better at f8 then f4.5 etc.

What I wanted was the capability to set the aperture and shutter and let the ISO vary, within limits, to make the correct exposure, and this is basically exactly what ISO Auto achieves when the camera is set to manual. For some reason I had assumed that ISO Auto would have no effect when in manual.

So now I often use this approach. I have also set the "function" button (option 14 in the Custom Settings Menu) to show ISO value in viewfinder. Now on a clear day with say my 50mm f1.8 lens I will set ISO to 100, camera to Manual, Shutter to 1/125 and aperture to f8 (f5.6 if dull).

When taking photo I check in viewfinder and

If meter is in centre then I know exposure is correct.

If ISO Auto is flashing I can press the function button to see what it is and decide to accept or make change to shutter and/or aperture.

If meter shows under exposure then I know that current max value in "ISO auto" is not enough to give correct exposure, so I can adjust aperture and/or shutter until meter is in centre again.

If meter is showing over exposure then I must increase shutter speed and/or higher f-number.

Remember my main emphasis is to achieve a certain shutter/aperture combination. If only one of these is important to a specific shot then choose Shutter or Aperture mode, if neither is important then choose Program mode.

(NOTE: Photos of D80, menus and viewfinder information all taken with Canon Powershot A710 IS. I have used Adobe Photoshop Elements 5 and before that 4 for several years. Then suddenly on the 26th it would not load, although it did work last time I used it a couple of days before. The Organiser (Organizer) started to load and when it got to "Initializing threads" it just disappeared. Rest of the system was fine, Even PSE 5 Editor could be started by clicking on file in Program Files folder but would not go to Organizer from within Editor either.

I un-installed and re-installed TWICE, no change. Followed some very detailed tips from Adobe Support pages that involved changing PSA (Catalogue) files and Windows XP register, but no change.

Adobe web pages then suggested to stop all start up programs via RUN MSCONFIG although I found it easier to do this through Windows Defender Software Tools.

Fix found (or rather stumbled across)

Then I saw somewhere a reference that CODECS can cause this. Now I had installed some unrelated utility that had also installed latest QuickTime so I tried to un-install this, which threw up an error message during un-install. Anyway tried to start PSE again and it went a bit further with a different error message this time (sorry forgot to note down error).

So I made sure it was un-installed by renaming "QuickTime "Folder in "Program Files" and what do you know, PSE 5 loaded fine!!

However next day back to same old problem. I noticed that the QuickTime icon was on my desk top again, some how it had installed itself. So again I un-installed it but again PSE disappeared at "Initializing Threads" stage. I discovered there was a new QuickTime folder next to the one I had renamed, I had renamed it QuickTime-delete-26-11. So rename this new one and PSE 5 works fine again.

Used Defender to remove QuickTime from Startup as opposed to just disabling it, so time will tell if it manages to get in the way again.

One bonus however was that whilst I was disabling Startup Programs I managed to find solution to unrelated problem of collapsing icons on desk top, see next post for detail,

Test Post

This is a short test to see how posts work.

Digital replaces film

Recently I decided to concentrate on digital photography only.
